When a student walks into my classroom, I want them to know that they matter. That they matter to me. I want them to feel the way I did in first grade when I wanted to go to school even though I was sick because I knew my teacher would miss me. Over many years of teaching, I have grown as a person and as a teacher because I continue to learn from and with my students. I can’t wait to see what I can learn from them this year as I teach 6th Grade Reading, 6th Grade Foundations and 7th Grade English Language Arts!
The students and I will learn together using a workshop model that looks like this:
Welcome and orientation to lesson
Brief demonstration of a reading/writing/speaking/listening strategy
Students practice using strategies as they read their own independent books, create writing and/or meet with me individually or in small groups
Students share their learning with each other
At the end of the day I go home to my husband and a dog. Our two adult children also live in the Twin Cities. Our family returned to the US after living for twenty years in SE Asia, where I taught in international schools. My own elementary and middle-school years were spent attending international schools in southern Africa. I have always been excited to learn about cultures other than my own.
When I am not teaching, I like to sing in choirs, cook and eat international food with my family, and bake gluten-free goodies. I know that each of my students has a life outside of school too, and that life includes caregivers at home. I look forward to partnering with caregivers to create a safe and meaningful space in which our students can learn.
